McGwire gives his best remorseful face during an interview with Bob Costas

Former major league slugger Mark McGwire admitted Monday that steroids and human growth hormone helped make him a home run king.

This comes as no big surprise to you and I. Here is some of what he had to say.

“The toughest thing is my wife, my parents, close friends have had no idea that I hid it from them all this time,” McGwire told The Associated Press in an emotional, 20-minute interview. “I knew this day was going to come. I didn’t know when.”

McGwire apologized saying he used ‘roids and human growth hormone on and off for a decade, starting before the 1990 season and including the year he broke Roger Maris’ single-season home run record in 1998.

“I wish I had never touched steroids,” McGwire said. “It was foolish and it was a mistake.”

Yes, it was a huge mistake Mark. Thanks for finally coming forward. Now why can’t we just leave it at that?

“I did this for health purposes. There’s no way I did this for any type of strength purposes,” he said, “I’ve always had bat speed. I just learned how to shorten my bat speed. I learned how to be a better hitter. There is not a pill or an injection that is going to give me the hand-eye – or give any athlete – the hand-eye coordination to hit a baseball. A pill or an injection will not hit a baseball.”

I agree. There is no pill or injection that will help anyone hit  baseball. But all that strength has to add distance, right? I mean, hand-eye coordination aren’t the only attributes that make a complete athlete, are they? Strength has to count for something.

Don’t apologize to the family of Roger Maris and then turn around and say the use of PED’s in no way helped you break his single season home run record. Just come clean and let the chips fall where they may.
